Founder of Onesole, Dominque McClain Barteet, speaking to Jean Chatzky about how to turn your idea into a business on Oprah radio!
Shark Tank Season 2 Finale!

Talking about Onesole and life after Shark Tank

Hi! I’m Dominique McCalain Barteet, creator of Onesole Shoes, and this is my invention story.
I’m a pharmacist that worked standing 12 hours a day. I needed a comfortable shoe that was also fashionable. So I inveted Onesoles with Soft-Step insoles and interchangeable tops. I traveled extensively and Onesole enabled my luggage to be lighter. I combined fashion, comfort, versatility, and convenience to create Onesole shoes.
Quick Change Artist’s Onesole shoe idea is a 20 year vision that came to fruition in the year 2002. I wanted to create a shoe that would be versatile, fun, economical, and easy for travel. You can virtually have a closet full of different shoes with a couple of our soles and some tops. Each sole has interchangeable tops that fit every sole with just a couple of snaps. This allows you to match any outfit economically and with great comfort. We also have accessories such as t-shirts, hanging collector straps, and bags to collect your different shoe tops. The idea is patented and is constantly expanding every day to fulfill an innovative shoe niche in today’s market.
Dominique McClain Barteet,RPh is a registered pharmacist, who operates a multi million dollar pharmacy in Florida. Her family is from S Carolina and Mississippi, but she lived all over the world from Tokyo to Alaska to Seattle to Illinois to Texas to N Carolina to Charleston, SC and finally settling in Palm Beach. She graduated from The College of Charleston Honors Program and the Medical University of S Carolina with honors. She was the philanthropic chairman for her sorority Chi Omega in college raising thousands of dollars for many charities. She has always been an overachiever from winning Miss American Teenager in N Carolina to joining the U.S.P.A. and playing polo even with a fear of horses. She thought of the shoe concept 20 years ago and started to toy around with it about 5 years ago as a hobby in the back of her pharmacy. It was difficult running the pharmacy and starting a new concept, as well as, a new business and a single mom.. However, with her strong work ethic and determination, along with some very good multi-tasking employees in both businesses they paved the way to success.
Today the Onesole shoes are selling like hotcakes around the world and there is no other product like it in its existence.
Dominique did all of this with no business or fashion education!!
Dominique has always liked a challenge and it looks like the gamble has paid off for her.
Dominique Barteet was at a trade show a few years ago on behalf of her business venture Onesole, when someone handed her a card. The card was in reference to a TV show, ABC’s Shark Tank, and the holder explained an interest in showcasing Barteet’s unique invention.
“I lost the card,” Barteet explains with a laugh. “I really didn’t take the idea seriously at first… that I could get picked for the show. Even when they called me, I found out that out of 60 people picked, only 30 aired, and I thought to myself ‘no way’. In the beginning, I had that ‘no way’ attitude.”
Despite her initial disbeliefs, there was no denying that Barteet had concocted a savvy idea. From her experience as a pharmacist, Barteet knew the importance of having not only a comfortable shoe, but one that was easy to travel with. In her spare time and through some trial and error, she developed her first prototype of what would eventually become a Onesole shoe.
The name says it all: Onesole offers the option to own a standard comfortable sole along with interchangeable decorative tops, providing consumers with one shoe of many options. Think of it as stylish multi-tasking for your feet. By following satisfied customers, Barteet managed to sell $20,000,000 in four years by word-of-mouth alone. Since the show’s Finale aired, Barteet now finds herself in the whirlwinds of an extremely busy business.
“Since the show aired, everything has taken off, and what is amazing is that it all started as a hobby. I did not take one business class, or shoe design class…I originally did this all for fun. That is the key I think; you need to be interested in what you are doing and you need to have a passion for it.”
With international sales and multiple growth opportunities on the horizon, Barteet has come a long way. Today those original prototypes are now glass encased in her own personal shoe museum, a reminder of just how far Onesole has come. Now, everyone wants to know where Onesole is going. Ask Barteet and she will explain that her focus for the future of this company is “not to make money, but to become a household name.”
Barteet reminds others that like any success, there is some downside to such rapid growth. “There have been some bumps and some failed working relationships along the way, but you cannot let things like that stop you. You’ve got to keep working and keep moving forward.” Barteet also urges fellow entrepreneurs to “have fun with everything you do and remember that nothing happens overnight.”
In the beginning, Barteet had no money and no experience- just inspiration. And now, as her business is booming, inspiration is ever present- but from a variety of new sources. Barteet says she reads every single letter that is sent to Onesole. Some of them influence her decisions for the business (like deciding to keep everything made in the United States), while other letters say “thank you.
Barteet recounts countless stories of the people she inadvertently inspired to start a business of their own. People who recognize her in public often stop and explain to her their new plans to go after their own goals and follow their own dreams. For Barteet, this type of widespread inspiration has been the biggest and most pleasant surprise of all. “I did create a product that was successful, but the response from so many people about what I did and how it has inspired them is the most surprising thing to me; it is overwhelming.”
Favorite quote: “Everything happens for a reason.”
December 2, 2011 Dominique McClain Barteet was the Keynote Speaker at the Northwood University Annual Noel Luncheon at the Brazalian Court Hotel in Palm Beach, FL. She spoke about her entrepreneurial journey and what it takes for success!
This week you can find Dominique in New York City! She's kicking butt, taking names and doing big things for Onesole. Keep an eye out for an update of her successes.

New Concept in Women’s Shoes is a Snap!
(West Palm Beach, Fla.) - Convertibles are becoming popular again in South Florida. This Christmas Onesole Shoes are riding the wave of popularity with the newest and most innovative concept to come along in the shoe industry in quite awhile. The Onesole concept gives wearers the option of interchangeable tops on comfortable stylish soles. Every top fits every style shoe and can be changed with a snap. “The choices are endless for the custom tops, says founder Dominique Barteet, a Florida pharmacist who was tired of having a closet full of shoes she would wear once.
She recently patented the idea and expanded on the tops with experimentation, so that they could be matched to any outfit or fabric, monogrammed, embellished with crystals, or personalized with photos. The one-of-a-kind tops snap on quickly and allow you to go from dressy to casual in seconds. A Onesole purchase gives the buyer the option of endless tops with one set of soles and now, with the latest advances in technology, you can have your favorite photograph placed on the shoe tops, or match your favorite skirt or handbag to the shoe tops. “The customized process only takes a day and you can have a custom top that can be changed with a snap for easier travel and endless possibilities,” Barteet said. Onesole Shoes are currently available for sale on the website and at the factory based in West Palm Beach. Soon the shoes will appear in boutiques across the country. For more information you can visit Quick Change Artist atwww.onesole.com or call 561-842-6476.
